Townsville is a large regional city on the north-eastern coast of Queensland. Townsville is adjacent to the largest section of the Great Barrier Reef. Townsville is Australia's largest urban centre north of the Sunshine Coast.

Townsville lies approximately 1,300 km north of Brisbane and 350 km south of Cairns. Magnetic Island lies 8 km offshore, to the north of Townsville. The Ross River flows through Townsville.

The A6 (Flinders Highway) connects Townsville to Charters Towers and Mount Isa in the west. Train and rail services from Brisbane pass through Townsville and continue through to Cairns, including the regular Tilt Train service between Brisbane and Cairns. The Townsville Region is characterised by its "dry" tropical climate. Townsville has an average daily temperature between 19.7 to 28.8 degrees C.
